Swirl Marks and Dark Painted Vehicles:
A common frustration for car owners and detailers is the difficulty removing fine scratches that cause swirl marks on automotive paint. Swirl marks are easily noticeable on dark cars and can be difficult to remove. These very fine scratches require less aggressive methods to remove compared to heavier scratches that are typically removed with buffing compounds. However, it can be done with the proper techniques and products.
What Causes Swirl Marks?
The fine scratches that produce swirl marks are typically caused by aggressive use of compounds during buffing or everyday wear and tear on automotive finishes. Other causes, which can be prevented with proper care, include:
How to Remove Swirl Marks by Hand:
Many swirls can be removed by hand using a foam applicator and a fine polish, such as Kleen-Shine One Step cleaner polish. Apply the product to the foam applicator and rub it in by hand using circular motions. Remove it with a clean, soft, microfiber cloth. And remember to always work in the shade on a cool surface.
One added benefit of Kleen-Shine One Step is that it also contains a protective wax. You are removing swirls and protecting paint in one step, so you can maximize your time!
Removing Swirl Marks with a Dual Action Polisher:
For more stubborn swirls, we recommend using a dual action polisher with a soft foam polishing pad and fine polish. It also saves time and effort when polishing an entire car.
Traditional rotary buffers spin the pad to work in the product but can generate heat that can scratch or burn through paint if not used properly. Dual action polishers spin and oscillate; they are less aggressive than rotary buffers but more effective than conventional orbital wax applicators.
To remove swirls with a dual action polisher, apply a fine polish like Kleen-Shine One Step onto the soft foam pad attached to the polisher. Apply to the paint using medium machine speed, working in the polish in a back and forth overlapping pattern, applying a thin coat. Re-apply the product to the pad as necessary as you work around the car. Once you are finished applying the polish, you can then remove it with a clean, soft, microfiber cloth. This is the fastest, easiest way to remove swirls and apply wax in one step.
